Buffalo Chips Weekly News Update

From Linda Hall (Formal results are not up as of 2:15 p.m. on Monday 17 Oct.)
Humboldt Redwoods Half-Marathon and other Options…

First I want to mention that the Super Senior Women's team (Barbara Miller, Linda Hall, and Johanne Christmas) won a $50 team prix\ze for our first place finish at the Heritage Oaks 10k in September. (and Barbara Miller won $500 for her outstanding age graded performance in that same race). Yah team. The supersenior women are again in first place in the USATF series and way ahead of all the others this year

This weekend at Humboldt was a perfect day for the Half marathon. It was sunny and cool. The redwoods were beautiful. We had a great chips turn out and several groups remarked to me about how many chips they saw at the pasta feed the night before and wearing chips gear during the race. I did not have a pen with me so I do not have the times for everyone, but here are some highlights and lists of folks I saw running (apologies to those I missed):

Half Marathon Chips Men:
Dennis Early
Bill Pequinot
Doug Braasch
Joel Contreras
Monty Schacht
Mario Sanchez
Dennis Scott
Mike Schwartz
(at least one other chip male whose name I don't know)

Half Marathon Chips Women
Maggie Ward (age group 5th place medal
Barbara Miller (second in USATF 60-69), first in age group awards (65-69)
Linda Hall (age group 5th place medal.....6:04 faster than last year with a finishing time of 2:08:15.....hurrah, still getting faster)...Sorry I don't have anyone else's times, yet)
Nova Poff
Ann Burkhart
Kate Sutherland
Carolyn Leung
Lesa Halvert
Claire Hanamoto
Johanne Christmas

In addition, this year for the first time (that I am aware of) they had a 5 k race in conjunction with the half and full marathons. Chip Larry White placed first in his age group in that race (and there was more than one person in that age group!). Congratulations Larry! Larry like the rest of us got a great blue shirt with an original flying bird of prey artwork on it. Very cool.

Many of us enjoyed the fresh burritos at the natural foods place in Willets (on the way up and/or on the way home) and a cool orange Foster's Freeze (or a hot fudge sundae for those, like Bill Pequinot, who really worked hard and is trying to qualify for Boston)

Run to the Sun, Hawaii in March…

Herb Tanimoto is heading out for this challenging run in March of 2006, and he is looking for any other Chips that might be interested in taking on this event. It can also be done as a 3 person relay. Contact Herb directly….check the Chips roster or 530 885-3066

In the WORLD RACING Scene…

Haile Gebrselassie set a course record of 2:06:20 at Amsterdam this past Sunday, but while he won by more than 2 minutes, he did not get a new world best time for this distance. He had nobody at all close to him the last 10-15 km, and he did slow in the second half compared to Tergat’s second half at Berlin where he ran UNDER 1:02 for that 21 km. Haile turned the second 21 km on Sunday in a bit over 1:04, so…the best time was missed even if he got a new PR and CR on the day !

Beijing International Marathon…
Two Chinese women dueled it out over the last kilometer to finish only 10 seconds apart with both crossing in the 2:21:xx territory ! The lead male at 2:06 was misdirected in the last kilometer and while recording the victory apparently missed about 800m of the actual course (the women ran the full course).

Buffalo Chips Weekly Workout Update

From Mark Murray...Saturday 8 Oct.

Thank's to all who showed up for the Folsom XC race on Saturday for the 2005 debut of the Chips Mens Masters team. Rich Hanna, racing for River City Rebels, was the overall winner of the Masters race, leading the Rebels to victory over the host Aggies. The Chips masters contingent finished 3rd, just ahead of Fleet Feet. We were led by Brad Lael (15th overall). The key performance of the day for the men had to be Mark Lantz, who just 2 weeks after a 3rd place finish at the Rio del Lago 100, showed some leg speed as the Chips #2 man (20th), followed b yours truly (21st). Dennis Early (24) and John Nichols (28) rounded out the scoring 5. New Chips Andrew Hitchings and Andrew Schooley played key roles, finishing ahead of Fleet Feet's #4 and #5 finishers. By my unofficial scoring, the team finish was: Rebels 23 Aggies 36 Chips 75 Fleet Feet 85 Rebels 'B' 129 (Despite putting 3 runners in the top 10, series leading Excelsior had no other finishers and failed to score. Empire and GVH also had less then 5 guys). The Seniors divisions was super competitive, with some 7 teams battling it out. By my scoring, the Chips seniors led by Arnold Utterback, Bob Fredenburg, and Joel Contreras finished in a tie for 6th with Empire, which would be broken in the Chips favor thanks to the placing of 4th man Dennis Scott.

Oct. 8, Landshark 5/10k...

In the 5k Steve Bond and Gary Lotspeich were towards the top of the list; both are getting back to form after major breaks in their racing. Linda Hall won her division in the 5k.In the 10k, Chris Enfante captured the 50-54 age division with a solid 41 and change.

COMING: This Sunday, 16 October ....Humboldt Redwoods Half-Marathon, PA-USATF

Oct. 9, 2005-Portland Marathon

A number of CHIPS traveled north to Portland for this annual citizen's race. Without prize money, this event has managed to grow to sell-out numbers of 7,000+ and host also a 5 mile run, walk, and kid's event. The mayor and even governor support the race, and the city is not so exploitive that hotel costs are padded.MYRA RHODES was the story of the day, as she re-connected with her Bison buddies and ran the 26.2 miles in the biggest AGE RECORD of the day. Myra turned a 3:59 finish to demolish the 70-74 age record by over 30 minutes, and of course WIN that age division with over a 2 HOUR lead on her next peer finisher. CONGRATULATIONS Myra! First CHIP in was Chris Iwahashi at 3:18 for the FIRST PLACE in the women's 45-49 division only 6 days before she enters another age group entirely ! Nancy McDowell and sister Diane finished together at about 3:31 for their Boston Qualifier, and Kim Swaze crossed in 3:48 to also line up for Beantown next year. Tony Lafferty finished in 3:56 and reports having a "good time through the whole weekend." Over 4 hours were Cynci Calvin and Ann Veling, and it would appear that they will be looking for another marathon before Boston qualifying ends. Race conditions were perfect on race day, and this is a good early marathon for any of the Chip travelers. World Running News...

Chicago Marathon, Sunday 9 October

Chicago is both a large citizen race and also a big prize money event on one of the fastest courses in the world. Deena Kastor was there this year to go for a "sub 2:20," and she was close to that goal for 24 miles. In the last 2.2 miles she slowed dangerously and her lead shrank to a mere 5 seconds at the end (2:21) over last year's women's winner (who produced a PR in pursuit !). Some concerns are being voiced around the internet as Deena had a male pacer the whole way, and he may have been providing significant feedback to Deena as to how close the race was getting ....On the men's side it was an All Kenya Show, as the top 10 men were all Kenyan and the top 5 there were all in the 2:07 and seconds range. The winning time, 2:07:04, was the fastest time produced so far in the world this year !Joyce Pryor, one of our ultra-Chip females, completed Chicago on Sunday ! Jeff Barbier ran a new PR there with his 3:06 finish.
