July 4th Free Five Miler

The 31st running of the Fourth of July Free Five-Miler went off with a bang Wednesday, shattering expectations for attendance. An estimated 800 to 1000 runners packed the River Park neighborhood for a brisk run on that fast, shady course. Aside from a few bugs--running short on bottled water and the sprinklers running on us the entire time--everything went as smoothly as could be expected.

Our major sponsor and partner this year was Sac Fit, and Executive Director Ken Press was there pitching in--including making a much needed last minute dash to the store for more bottled water.

We were also generously supported by Fleet Feet Racing, City Councilman Steve Cohn, and Assemblyman Dave Jones.

Novice race directors Ed Randolph and John Blue worked out last minute details on the fly and a host of Chips (including, but not limited to, Mark Lantz, John Nichols, Erik Skaden, Grant Carboni and Tony Lafferty) managed the course marshal efforts. Rena Schumann, Gina Adams, and Merie Paddeck ably ran the Chips booth. Tony Smith and Mario Sanchez did a bit of everything, as usual. Youth Chips and Youth Chips parents ran the aid station, hosted by former Chip Carl Dahl. (And thanks Carl for helping clean up and haul the aid station back to the finish line!) AJ Underwood took race photos (Which we'll post someday) and stepped up to start the race when John realized he didn't have a stop watch for the start.

The massive shopping and donation collection effort was provided by Jenny Hitchings who learned her car could carry a thousand pounds of water. And thanks to Dennis Scott for coming out the day before and touching up the mile marks, and to Lloyd Levine for leafleting his neighbors to alert them about an aid station we decided to move elsewhere. There were other Chips pitching in that I don't have names for, including a Chipette who did a significant amount of work at the finish line aid station. (Help!)

A special thanks to the FrontRunners for coming out and helping with registration and setting up the finish line aid station.

Thanks to all this years donors, including: Safeway, Trader Joes, Save Mart, Costco, and the 1011 12th Street Espresso Bar.

Oh! And there are Results:

Weekly News Updpdate (sortof)

New World Records….

27 June…(Courtesy of Race Results Weekly)

Haile Gebrselassie added two more world records to his illustrious collection at the Golden Spike Grand Prix tonight in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Knocking off consistent 67 to 68 second laps, the 23-year-old Ethiopian set a new mark in the one hour run, covering 21,285 meters over the course of 60 minutes to break the previous best, 21,101m, set by Mexican Arturo Barrios in La Fléche, France, on March 30, 1991.

"Today is just a fantastic day," said a beaming Gebrselassie, who said he knew just beyond the half-way point that the record would fall.

En route, the two-time Olympic 10,000m champion also broke the world record for 20,000m, covering 50 laps in 56:25.98, well within the previous 56:55.6 also set by Barrios.

16-17 June, Oslo…(Courtesy of Race Results Weekly) New Women’s 5k WR

MeseretDefar produced a staggering 14:16.63 world record in Oslo, Defar returns to action again in the 5000 at Ostrava. Although the 23-year-old Olympic champion hasn't promised to take her record down even further, she hasn't fully dismissed the possibility either. Defar pulled a Kenyan woman to a 14:22, which was also under Defar’s previous WR of 14:24 at the Oslo meet.

Western States 100, Saturday…and Sunday 23-24 June…

Running clearly the best executed effort to date, Chip Erik Skaden moved through several of the wanna-be-elites in the miles from 49 to 85 to once again claim second overall and a new PR of 16:36 on this very tough course. Chip John Nichols turned in perhaps the best run of his long running resume for a just over 20 hour finish. IMPRESSIVE. Chip Mark Lantz earned the “hero of the day” award for toughing it out through some very frustrating side issues to once again finish “under 24 hours.” Jeffrey Barbier cruised in around 26 hours with Grant Carboni having a bit of breathing room under that 30 hour level. Steve Harrold and Christine Flaherty easily beat that final cutoff line too. Also in the finisher group at 27:30 territory was a “Nick Ham” who is a Stockport Harrier from our sister club near Manchester !!! Congratulations Nick and ALL WS 100 finishers and those who did not finish but took that incredible challenge as far as possible “on the day.”

Upcoming….This one is fun in a sadistic kind of way, and you can experience the first 4 miles of the Western States 100 without having to do the remaining 96…and enjoy a great view from the top of the tram line…
