Thank you to all the Buffalo Chips who volunteered

Thank you to all the Buffalo Chips who volunteered at various running events throughout this past year. It is great to know that so many dedicated people always show-up to help make sure that the chips have quality events and aid stations. I have enjoyed meeting and working with all of you! CIM Results!

It was a great run for the Chips at CIM this year!

Here are the teams Cynci has submitted to PAUSATF. Below the team list is the overall pool of Chips she checks for PA status. If you see "Non PA" next to your name, you might consider joining so that you can help score Chips teams.

We had some really strong women’s and men’s open and masters teams this year!

Do you see yourself in this video?

Cheers!John

Chips Women's Performances at CIM 25 years of excellence

This 2007 version of the CIM saw new PRs by Chips Kirsten Schneider (2:52) and Jen Hitchings (2:54) joining a tradition of Chips women's impressive times at our hometown marathon and leading this year's herd of female finishers.

In the program booklet for this year, there is a summary of the "top 75" women's times over the history of CIM, and the second fastest on that list is by our own Eileen Claugus (2:40:04) back in 1985.  Third on the history record is another Chip, now living in Hawaii, Jeannie Urness (2:41:08).  The very top listing, Linda Somers, did train some with the Chips and was a Chip for a brief period in her early career before getting signed on for a real "professional support" contract.

However another way to reflect on excellence is not just by the very best single performance (PR), but on the overall continuity of excellent performance, and Chip Women account for 49 of those top 75 recorded female times and of those 49 top times, 22 were produced by just THREE of our club's female icons of distance:

Chris Iwahashi-8 of the 75 with course PB of 2:45:29 and average finish time of 2:53:08

Theresa McCourt-7 of the 75 with course PB of 2:50:10 and average of 2:54:04

Connie Kondo-7 of the 75 with course PB of 2:51:04 and average of 2:57:30

I might further note that the very last listed female on this year's top 75 list...who will be displaced by those super times for Kirsten and Jen...is June Hill-Falkenthal.  June was a "Chip" for all her strong running years, and she also WON the Sacramento Marathon (precursor to "Cowtown") one year with her PR of just seconds over......3 hours.

Run to Feed the Hungry, 2007

A good hunk of the herd turned out to support this year's annual Thanksgiving Day race.  First Chip home in the 10K(36:09) was High Dunger, Mr. Blue.  Mary Coordt was our first female over the 10K (37:14) finish line.  Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped make this event a great start to the holiday.

CIM, 2007

Ready, set, go?  Best wishes to all those running this weekend's 25th annual CIM.  If you're NOT running but want to partake in the action, consider volunteering at the Chips' booth on Friday or Saturday, or assisting at the aid station on Sunday. Club News….2008 Buffalo Chips Club Running Trip….

Our sister club in England, the Stockport Harriers, have picked out an event for June 2008 that they want us to join with them in an international travel experience.  This running holiday allows participation by runners/walkers of every level of fitness and racing inclination, as it is ….

Go JuistGo NorderneyGo SpiekeroogGo Neuwerk-Cuxhaven

Go BorkumGo BaltrumGo LangeoogGo Wangerooge

The above names are the eight small towns that host individual stages of this race series which involves a running/walking event EACH DAY from 6 June to 14 June.  The small towns represent a sequence of villages along the North Coast (NORDSEE) of Germany !!!  Two of the venues involve being transported out to island villages to run courses those days on these off-shore islands !

General outline:  We will have 8 days of running events from 6-14 June; entrants may do all of the events (ranging from 5k to 14 km in distance) or select some subset if they do not want or cannot do them all.  We plan to arrive in Germany and transport to the race area to join with our British sister club travelers and probably 2-3 Swedish runners on or about 4 June.  On 15 June we will leave the race venue hotel to travel to Berlin (3 nights) and then to the Bavarian Alps (2-3 nights) to enjoy the real beauty of the “Sound of Music.”  We will spend our final couple of nights near Frankfurt before our return to Sacramento.  Projected travel time: 16 nights; air, bus and train transfers and hotels with breakfast daily; dinners included for about 10 nights.   Total cost ESTIMATED at about $3500/person double occupancy, race entry additional depending on how many of the stages one selects.  E-mail Parrott (gparrott@csus.edu) to reserve a spot.  I will need expressions of interest by February with first deposits by 15 March ($500/person initial deposit).  Final exact costs will be confirmed by 15 February so that all may plan accordingly.

X-C Champs Sunday!

Arnold sez:

This Sunday is last chance for chips to show their cross country racin' stuff!

Get the details here. Let's try not to let it just be Arnold and Joel! (Not that there's anything wrong with them, but two doesn't make a team.)

John

Support the Youth Chips!

The Buffalo Chips Youth Running and Racing Team will once again be sending a large contingent to the USATF Jr. Olympic National Championship on December 8th in Lawrence Kansas. (The famous Rim Rock Farm XC Course). This year we are sending nearly 50 youth, with an additional 75 or so adults and 4 coaches. The parents and coaches will spend over $65,000.00 in travel expenses for this years competition. These youth have represented the Buffalo Chips Club well over the past 7 years with 10 National Champion Teams, an additional 12 top ten team finishes, and over 75 All Americans (Top 25 finisher in the Nation). Many of the Chips Youth have gone on to great college running teams and are constantly in the top finishers in NCAA Division I, II and NAIA National Championships. Most of our current youth are in the top 5-10% of State youth and High School runners.

One of the great traditions, and also of great community pride, is that the Buffalo Chips Club members have donated funds that have provided travel grants, for several years, to those individuals who have helped the teams achieve great success but, lack the financial capability to make the trip. The Youth Team coaches contribute hundreds of hours in training and preparation, thousands of dollars out of their pockets and great love of these kids and their sport to help these youth achieve what many can only dream of.

This year The Chips youth team is looking to raise approximately $2,000.00 in funds to award grants to assist 4-6 in making this trip to the national championships. If you can help in this endeavor, your tax-deductible donation can be sent in care of the Youth Chips Fund to the Club Treasurer at Buffalo Chips Running Club, P. O. Box 19908, Sacramento, CA 95819-0908. You can also contact the Buffalo Chips Head Youth Coach, George Paddeck, for additional information at (916) 960-6384.

The Youth Chips Running and Racing Team thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support of this worthwhile program.

Clarksburg 30K!

The Chips were out in force this weekend for a shot at this classic, autumn run. The rain stopped and the air was crisp and cool--ideal weather conditions for a long run. Clarksburg seems to be suffering from "event creep" and it seems like there are about a dozen different races going on at the same time now, but the course improvements (namely no out and back on the levee) really seemed to make the run more pleasant and a bit easier on the body.

Although the other races are growing, the PAUSATF 30K remains the focus. The first Chip in was the still improving Ed Randolph, who posted a solid 1:55. Your High Dunger John Blue was next in at 1:58, followed closely by Mark Murray in 1:59. (John is happy to note that this is an 8-minute PR for him at the 30K distance. Mr. Randolph has apparently never run a 30K before.)

The Bisonettes were also well represented by Kirsten Schneider (2:03) followed by Jenny Hitchings (2:03 and 2nd Masters). I believe these were new personal bests, too!

Extra credit goes to David Seyvertsen for running 2:16 after spending the entire night (awake) with his cousin in the emergency room. David swore there was no alcohol involved, but high jinks are implicated. We hope the cousin is healing well.

There were many, many other Chips out there. It made me proud to see all those Chips in uniform!

John

Chips Fly at Local Races!

Before I get to Clarksburg, I need to make note of some spectacular race results from the prior weekend.

First off, Eric Johnson went to the My Sisters' House 5k with a mission to break 17:00. Unfortunately, he came up a few seconds short but still ran away with an overall win! His 17:04 is even more impressive considering he was running all alone since the second place runner was a full 25-seconds back! The next Chip in looks like Ernest Takahashi, running just over 21-minutes and finishing first Super Senior.

Secondly, Mark Lantz tried out the short 30K distance at the Helen Klein Ultra Classic and found it to his liking. He ran a swift 1:59, earning first place and setting a new course record in the process! Meanwhile, in the longer 50 mile race, Rena Schumann showed us she knows how it's done by running a solid 7:49 and finishing 2nd female! The next Bisonette in appears to be Barbara Ashe (9:12), followed by Barbara Elia (9:47). Jose Rodarte finished what I believe to be only his 2nd 50 miler (10:19) while co-worker Diane Vlach probably finished her second 50 miler of the week (10:30). There are rumors of Western States 100 applications being filled out and rushed to the post office...

Finally, at Apple Hill John Nichols dug deep for a 4th place overall finish in 52:41 on that hilly course, scoring another credit in the ongoing Nichols/Murray running and smack-talking competition. Murray was the 2nd Chip in at 56:59, followed by Bruce Aldrich in 58:50.

There were a number of tremendous runs out there--Great Job Chips!

Susan B Womens 5k

Dear Chippers,

You know the old saying "The early bird gets the worm?"...The Susan B Womens 5k race committee knows that in order to get the biggest and fattest worms (goodies, sponsorships, food), you have to make some plans before the start of the new year so we are making plans for a meeting before the holidays when everyone falls off of the planet.

Are you interested in one of the following?:

1) Being on the planning committee that meets once per month starting in January to make decisions and divvy up race duties.
OR

2) Helping out with various race-associated tasks without having to attend meetings.

If so, email Carol Parise at cappp@comcast.net and be a part of Sacramento's BEST women's only race (bias? NOT!)

Thank you
Carol Parise

Reminder: Reflective Apparel

I think I'm going to repeat this:

It's that time of year again! Although Day Light Savings Time doesn't start until November 1st, it's already getting dark enough that you need to start wearing some type of reflective gear or light for Tuesday Night's workout. We may have some to sell to you, but I'd recommend you pick something up ahead of time. Fleet Feet usually has something in stock.

Humboldt Half Marathon

Under absolutely flawless conditions (very cool and windless), the Humboldt Half Marathon produced very fast times in a well run, no-frills event. (Well, there was one guy playing bagpipes before the start.) The course is hillier than this runner expected, and there was one short, sharp climb right before the finish that caused me some trouble.

The top times for the men were a painfully fast 1:07 open and 1:11 for the masters! Top times for women were an open time of 1:20 and top masters time of 1:22—just one in front of Chipper Jenny Hitchings.

Chips present included (In order of appearance at the finish line): John Nichols (1:20:17), John Blue (1:20:51 PR!), Jenny Hitchings (1:24:24 PR and 2nd Masters!), Doug Braasch (1:39), Barbara Miller (1:45), Monty Schacht (2:05), Mike Schwartz (2:10), Larry White (2:18), and Linda Hall (2:30).

If you weren’t there, you should have been.

NOVA Presents Unprecedented Access to the Boston Marathon

----------------------------------

NOVA: Marathon Challenge to air on KVIE

Sacramento, CA, October, 2007: Every year thousands of athletes from around the world travel to Boston to compete in one of the most prestigious racing events – the Boston Marathon. In this compelling and inspirational program, NOVA documents how the average person prepares for this ultimate test of stamina and endurance on Marathon Challenge, debuting Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00pm on KVIE (Ch. 6).

Following Marathon Challenge, KVIE presents A Race for the Soul, an original KVIE documentary that profiles the physical and mental challenges encountered by the participants of the Western States 100, a demanding ultra-marathon held in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. A Race for the Soul airs Tuesday, October 30 at 9:00pm.

For Marathon Challenge, NOVA gained unprecedented access to the 111th Boston Marathon course. Filmed in cooperation with the Boston Athletic Association and Tufts University, the film examines the challenges, frustrations, and joy of thirteen sedentary individuals as they partake in a nine-month training regimen for the arduous 26.2-mile run.

Ranging in age from 22 to 60, the novice runners on Team NOVA include individuals with varying medical histories and backgrounds. Specialists and doctors at Tufts University monitor the runners throughout the training to track changes in their fitness levels. NOVA covers the physiology of running and shows how the human body responds to intense physical demands with sophisticated technology and stunning computer graphics.

Injuries and family ordeals arise, yet the team meets faithfully every Sunday as they support one another in the experience of both mind and body transformation while preparing for the epic race. On April 16, 2007, those who made it through training join 20,000 other runners to participate in the Boston Marathon, a journey that few on Team NOVA ever dreamed possible.

Training Run Partner / Help

Hello,

My name is Kenny Lima. I will be in Sacramento this weekend and would like to run the first 20 miles of the CIM course but I have a logistics issue .... transportation!

I can park at the start or end but have no way of getting back.

So, I write to ask, is there anyone who would like to join me on this training run? I hope to run the first 12 miles between 8:30 - 8:15 per mile and the last 8 miles at about 7:30s per mile.

If schedule or time does not permit perhaps I can get someone to meet at 20 mile mark, where I'll park and they can drive me to the start. I'll pay for gas and coffee!!!!

I can be reached via cell phone: 916-716-0942 or of course via this email address kayel17@verizon.net.

Thank You for your time!!

Sincerely,

Kenny Lima

Message #1:
We would like you to come forth to be on the Awards Committee. For those of you who are power-hungry, possess a seething desire to affect the self-esteem of friends and foe, and/or been fired, demoted, or reprimanded due to inappropriate displays of a warped sense of humor, then the Awards Committee is right for you! To be part of this elite cadre of the finest Chips, contact Gina Adams at Sparkle71710@yahoo.com.

Message #2:
In search of new Annual Awards categories. Some that have been offered include: "Biggest Cherry-Picker" and "Most likely to stray off course." Don't hold back. All suggestions, no matter how unconventional, will be considered. They don't even have to be running related. Send all suggestions to Gina Adams at Sparkle71710@yahoo.com.

Message #3:
Actively soliciting stories, embarrassing moments, quirky personality traits, or anything humorously shameful or joyful about yourself and/or fellow Chips. These will be held in the highest confidence by the Awards Committee (note the integrity of the Awards Committee by the selection criteria above). Send all emails to Gina Adams at Sparkle71710@yahoo.com.

Running Shoe Recycling Drop-Off at Cowtown Marathon Race this Sunday Oct. 7th.

Dear Chips,

Any of you CHIPS out there that have old running shoes, tennis shoes, or sneakers that have been piling up, please bring them to the Cowtown Marathon Race this Sunday Oct. 7th. Molly Hitchings, a CHIPS family member, manages an athletic shoe recycling program with McClatchy HS classmates, known as “the Sole Patrol”, and they will be collecting your old shoes at the race

What To Bring:
Relatively clean and dry adult size and kid size running shoes, tennis shoes, or sneakers. Please tie the pairs of shoes together so that we can more easily and quickly sort them.

What Not To Bring:
No dress shoes, boots, flip-flops, sandals, hiking boots, or kids’ shoes with lights. No wet or muddy shoes — they cause the other shoes to get moldy.

What Will Happen With Your Old Shoes:
The Sole Patrol will sort the shoes, and donate the clean, re-usable shoes to local or international relief organizations that will provide them to homeless and needy people. The shoes that are not reusable will be shipped to a Nike recycling facility via Nike’s Re-Use a Shoe Program. Those shoes will be ground up and used to make athletic surfaces, including tracks, weight room flooring and playground surfaces. If you have any questions, send an email to Molly Hitchings at mollyhitch@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for your support!

Mark Lantz is USATF Masters Trail 100K Champion!

(Mark Murray does pretty well, too!)

From the PAUSATF website:

From Hollis Lenderking, PA/USATF Ultrarunning Chair

lantzmurray

Mark Lantz (l) and Mark Murray (r) at the 2005 Californai International Marathon Pacific Association's Mark Lantz, 42, was crowned USATF National Masters champion at the Where's Waldo 100K in Oregon on August 18. Lantz, of Folsom, finished third overall among a field of 122 runners, in a time of 10:56:13, less than eight minutes behind the overall winner. The race is conducted annually along single-track mountain trail starting at the Willamette Pass 70 miles east of Eugene, and was serving for the first time as the USA Masters Trail 100K championship.

Two-time defending PA Ultrarunner of the Year Beverly Anderson-Abbs, 43, of Red Bluff, was the runner-up in the women's race, finishing just behind Lantz in 11:09:08 (fourth in overall field).

Lantz was thrilled with his win.

"I was especially proud of the run since I lost 40 minutes because of course [-marking] tampering by some mean hikers."

As a result of this increasingly common problem plaguing backcountry ultras, Lantz was unsure of his location on the course.

"I caught Bev and [PA/USATF runner and third-place USATF] Mark Murray up
the last climb, as Mark explained where I was and told me to put the
hammer down. It was my best performance, period," Lantz exclaimed, "and
that course is soft, shaded, and just a blast to run." Mark Murray finished fifth overall, fourth in the USATF masters men's division and seventh overall(11:15:46).

Buffalo Chips First Monthly "Smash & Dash Free 5K"

Most of you missed a great 5K time trial this morning (Saturday) from University Park! Under near-perfect racing conditions (i.e., daylight), John Nichols crushed the field, and continued to whittle at the Murray deficit, with a tremendous 17:08 performance. Today’s winner will be receiving a new car! Well, at least some new car windows and probably a new wallet to replace the ones stolen and/or damaged by thieves. :( (Sorry John!)

Bonus Points go to Ashley who showed up to her first Chips workout only to discover “Hey! We’re racing a 5K!” and then went ahead and ran with us anyway.

Unlike the Pear Fair, we have accurate and complete results the same day!

Complete Results:

1. John Nichols 17:08
2. John Blue 17:21
3. David Seyvertsen 18:55
4. Gina Adams 22:09
