Free Auburn Overlook Public Art Workshop

Hi Chips,

I received the following note from Virginia Dains, a local artist. It looks like a fun opportunity for the Chips to give back a little to the City of Auburn. Check it out!
John

Hello All,

I would love it to have you all up for my clay tile workshop. It's free and should be fun. Save the date: January 20th from 10:00 to 4:00 at the Canyon View Community Center in Auburn (off Auburn-Folsom Road). The Community Center sits on the edge of the American River Canyon and was the field office for Bureau of Reclamation when construction of the Auburn Dam was underway. I can forward maps as the time comes round.

This project is a community built ceramic tile sign 2 1/2 feet high by 8 feet wide, 2-sided. There is an existing concrete sign with a massive rock base that used to say "Auburn Dam Overlook"... after several vandal attacks and changes in the Bureau's plans, the brass letters were taken off and Auburn Parks Department now manages the property. The sign is currently spray painted with block letters "OVERLOOK PARK"-- It is absolutely hideous.

The City of Auburn runs two major endurance events through this park: the Western States Run, 100 miles from Tahoe to Auburn, and the Tevis Cup, a horse and rider event that takes a similar route. The City Council announced that Auburn is now the Endurance Capitol of the World! Whereby thousands of people are greeted by this eyesore-of-a-sign every year.

So... Last year, I approached the Parks Department and B. Reclamation to re-do the sign.... four months later.... I got permissions, approved design, but no money. But heck, we're off and running. I have cut-slab lettering glazed and fired. The rest of the sign -- background and borders-- is going to be comprised of a mosaic of tile fishes that are made by the public. After my first workshop in October, I ended up with 250 tiles. The all-day workshop on January 20th should get us the rest of the way...with your help, that is.

I will bring all the clay and simple tools. We use templates so that the fish are generally the same shape for tiling together later. But, the range of decorations people have done is really fun. Kids take right to it. Adults seem to want to stand and watch, but we dont allow that -- protocol violation, everybody makes fish.

If you want to come and make a fish (or two)it will take about 20-30 minutes. I am providing refreshments. If its a nice day, there's great hiking in the American River Canyon as well. Im also keeping a mailing list of participating artists so that everybody EVERYBODY! will be invited to the artist's reception after the installation (probably to be held in conjunction with the 2007 Confluence Festival held at Overlook Park in early June).

Anybody who wants to help in other ways-- and learn the messy art of setting tile? is certainly welcome to join my lonesome band of "artists for art's sake" -- there's plenty to do.

So for now, mark the date-- Saturday: January 20th, 10:00 to 4:00. I look forward to seeing you all. Oh! groups of 10 or more should make a reservation with Auburn Area Recreation and Parks Department to make sure we have table space when you arrive... Call Parks at (530) 885-8461 ext. 0 to make a reservation. Fishes Swim Free! Pass the word!

Volunteer opportunity

For anyone interested in volunteering... A job has opened up to help find Chips in races. We have a program called the Chip Finder that you run against text files of race results and it outputs possible matches. There are also other ways of filtering race results for Chip members. Pete Zinsli has a new method he has made available for use too.

If you are interested please contact a board member or the Prez. John Blue

car break-in on University Ave

Hi Chips,

I just wanted to warn you of yet another car break-in on University Ave.
near Sacramento State. I was parked near the river access yesterday morning
(10:00 am) as far away from the underpass as I could and close to homes, yet
after a 50 minute run, I found my passenger front window smashed in. I had
over $1,000 worth of things stolen (including my wallet and my house keys
and car keys to both my cars, as I put my main set of keys in the car's
middle console). Nothing was in view, but they tore apart my car and found
my stuff.

It was heart wrenching and a total hassle! Please be advised that this is
not a safe area to park. I am certain the thieves were watching and waiting
for me to get out of my car and go for a run. Then they seized the
opportunity.

What a bummer!
