Helen Klein 50k Almost a “Chip Sweep”
Taking 2nd (Erik Skaden), 3rd,John Blue, and 4th (Mark Murray), the Bison completely dominated the top of the finisher order in the 50k event. FIRST WOMAN was Kirsten Schneider in 4:19 (8th overall) and Dennis Early rounded out the top 10 overall in that 50k distance. Also on the finisher list: Dan Cox, Ron Peck and Becky Johnson to note just some of the other buffalo running 31 miles.
Mark Lantz was 5th in a solid 6:57 in the 50 mile division, and Ron Tabler, Cynci Calvin and Linda McFadden were easy to find on the 30k finisher record.
The really unfortunate element of the 30k at Saturday’s Helen Klein races is that it was started….EARLY. Yikes ! It is one thing to start a race a few minutes late, but another entirely to send off the main field while some are still checking sweats, finishing their last porta-potty time, etc.
Dean Karnazes Finishes 50-50-50 with a FLOURISH!
Running the NYC Marathon as the last element in his 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, highly promoted Dean Karnazes showed his critics that he IS one pretty tough animal. Running 1:30:31 for the crowded first 13.1, dramatic Dean closed his last 13.1 in a slightly negative 1:29:59 to finish at 3:00:30, which was by far his fastest 42km in any of his 50 finishes and he ALMOST caught the highly touted Lance Armstrong (2:59:36). Lance was about TWO MINUTES ahead of Dean at around the 30km point, but Dean was simply MUCH STRONGER than Lance and finished much better over the last 8 miles.
Congratulations to ALL NYC MARATHON FINISHERS including our own Sara Heintz and at least a couple of other Sacramento based Big Apple Masters.
