Buffalo Chips Weekly News Update

Jed Smith 30k, 50k, and 50 Miler this Saturday (4 February)

Gibson Ranch Park will again host the club’s annual run-fest of ultra-endurance. Steve Wetmore as Race Director is bringing us another iteration of our club’s long-standing support of ultra distance running. Tracing it’s heritage back to the “Feather River 50 Miler” which brought entrants along a course from Yuba City to Sacramento, this year’s event is returning to the fast loop course at Gibson Ranch Park with Champion Chip Timing for official records.

The entrant shirts are recalling the theme of buffalo-in-motion, and every runner will enjoy great support and encouragement from club members, our club youth group, and even a few spectators!

So, let’s see everybody at Gibson Ranch Park on Saturday, 4 February. This is a great training run for Boston, for Comrades or even for Western States, and it is a chance for those of us NOT doing such major distance to HELP OTHERS and to give back to the sport something for all the rewards we have so regularly obtained.

See you THERE on Saturday!

NOTE: The club turnout for this past Saturday and Sunday training sessions was very encouraging. We had almost 20 people start the Saturday tempo/base building workout, and at least that many showed up at the Fish Hatchery for a solid endurance run around Lake Natomas. Those of us NOT DOING such longer distance had our own workout pattern on Sunday, since we did an “out and back” session along the south side of the river with about 50 minutes “out” and then a good effort back. You don’t have to be fast or marathon training to get in a good workout session at the weekend opportunities.

ASC Snowshoe Challenge

Buffalo Chips - In the past few days, I've managed to salvage the canceled USSSA California National Snowshoe Qualifier by convincing fellow Auburn Ski Club Board Members to offer our club as the host facility. Those of you who have organized races can imagine the effort required for one person to organize a national sanctioned race in less than two weeks. As of today, most of that work is now complete and the ASC Snowshoe Challenge is scheduled for SUN/19FEB2006.

Empire has already informed me that they are fielding a Team of 6 to 10 racers. I'm counting on my club, Tamalpa, to do the same. Snowshoe Racing is great fun. Atlas Snowshoe will be providing Demo Snowshoes for every first-timer participant. Your Team members and their families will have a great time. And just possibly, Empire and Tamalpa won't be the only running clubs fielding teams at this year's event.

Most of the info below and attached will be in the Tamalpa 'This &That' and 'Gazette' soon. Since the Registration Form isn't complete, your members can use the temporary form or download the final version within a few days. ASC and USSSA would greatly appreciate your notifying your members about this running event.

Posted to the 'Tamalpa This &That':

ASC Snowshoe Challenge / National Snowshoe Championship Qualifier, February 19, 2006. Auburn Ski Club, Donner Summit, CA. This is the only CA Qualifier Race for the USSSA Nationals being held at Bolton Valley, VT from March 24-26, 2006. Included are both 5k and 10k Qualifiers and a 5k Family Team Fun Race. Atlas Snowshoe is providing demo snowshoes for all first timers. For more information about Snowshoe Racing and this year's ASC Snowshoe Challenge go to the USSSA (www.snowshoeracing.com), Auburn Ski Club (www.auburnskiclub.org), and Atlas Snowshoe (www.atlassnowshoe.com) websites and/or contact John Stauffer (415-385-0065 / johnjstauffer@cs.com).

ASC is taking this event very seriously. Hope some of you can make it. Phone if questions or suggestions, cellular: 415-385-0065 - John

Marathon Summary U.S. 2005

The following link takes you to a most interesting summary of statistics from all U.S. marathons during 2005. The numbers are generally UP overall, but the times are slowing, as we have pointed up here repeatedly.

Further ONLY 1.6 % of all marathoners are now "breaking 3 hours." This certainly has become a more elite goal now than it was 20 years ago...when more like 5-8% of entrants would break 3 hours.

Check it out; it makes interesting reflections:

Boston Marathon Adopts Wave Start

From David Monti
© 2005 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA), organizers of the BAA Boston Marathon, announced today that for the 110th edition of their race in 2006 will have a wave start to improve the efficiency of the event. All participants, with the exception of athletes with disabilities and the elite women, will be sent off in two waves of approximately 10,000 runners each separated by a 30 minute gap. The first of the waves will go off at the race's traditional noon starting time, and the second at 12:30. The elite women, which organizers estimated to include 50-70 runners, will go off earlier at 11:31 a.m.

"This improvement will result in a vastly more efficient race," said Dave McGillivray, the event's race director. "This change is all positive and will benefit everything about the Boston Marathon, including our transportation plan and our accommodation of runners in the hours leading up to the race. The effects of this plan will be extensive: we are sensitive to our impact within Hopkinton (the town where the race starts), and this operational innovation addresses the concerns of town residents and officials." Boston has a very narrow start: just two standard lanes of traffic. As the event has grown through the easing of their qualifying standards, the start has become more and more congested. Last year, organizers said, it took half an hour for the last starter to cross the starting line. "Whereas it took the last official runners 30 minutes to cross the starting line last year, this year it will take fewer than 10 minutes for each wave to cross," McGillivray added. "It is important to note that the anticipated net difference in this method versus previous years' 'one gun, one start' is only about 10 minutes, meaning the last runner will be crossing the starting line this year at 12:40 p.m. as compared to 12:30 p.m. last year." Runners will continue to be seeded by qualifying time, and in theory, no runner in the second wave should catch any runner from the first wave. A big departure will be in how awards are given. Non-elite runners will be scored and ranked by their net time, which means that - although they will be starting 30 minutes later than those in the first wave - runners from the second wave will be timed and scored from the time they cross the starting line until the time they cross the finish line. This means that it is possible for one athlete to be racing another he cannot actually see. Prize money winners will continue to be awarded by gun time and all prize money will be awarded to athletes running in the elite womens' race or in the first mass wave. Organizers also announced a minor change to the race route within the last mile. In the 25th mile not far after the runners pass through Kenmore Square, participants will go under Massachusetts Avenue as they make their way along Commonwealth Avenue.

In the past, the course has taken runners across Massachusetts Avenue on Commonwealth Avenue. The change allows for pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Massachusetts Avenue while the race is in progress, providing an outlet in the Back Bay on a major roadway which previously did not exist. Naturally, the course has been remeasured and neither the starting line nor the finish line will need to be moved.

The 110th BAA Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 17.

Buffalo Chips Weekly News Update

New World Record in Half-Marathon

Haile Gebrselassie set up his own pacers and negotiated to run a separate “race” from all the regulars at the Phoenix Rock and Roll Marathon/Half-Marathon this past weekend. Under absolutely perfect conditions and on a flat and smooth course, his crew cruised with him through about 8km at 4:33/mile pace and when he dropped them, he speeded up to well under 4:30/mile to finish in an amazing 58:55 to shatter the previous WB by 21 seconds and become the first person to run under 59 minutes for the half-marathon ! According to the local reports, he also was officially credited with a new world best at 20km enroute.

The actual citizen half was won in 1:09 and the full in a solid 2:13 for men and 2:31 for women. All the top men and women were Ethiopians with one Japanese woman coming in 3rd on a training run at 2:35.

TOP CHIP FINISHER : Mary Coordt

Mary cruised the course on a last minute entry in 2:56 for 11th place female, finishing just out of the real $$$ which went 10 deep, but she was noted as FIRST female in the 35-39 Division.

Another DIVISION WINNER was Christine Iwahashi in the 50-54 group with a 3:17; the next woman in her age group was 18 minutes back. This was also an age group course record for the Phoenix event !

BIG NEW PR: Dave Michel

The focus for the Coordt “group” at Phoenix was husband Dave Michel’s goal of a new marathon PR. Dave had been under the close tutelage of Mary in his training over the last 3 months or so, and his workouts and tempo runs suggested the promise of a big improvement on his 3:35 best marathon time set in Portland a couple of years ago.

Coming through the half just behind the 3:30 pace group, Dave ran an impressive negative split to finish in 3:27 for an 8 minute new personal best. Wow!

Footnote: Actually Mary, Chris and Dave all ran negative splits!

Also Joel Contreras crossed in 4:08 looking very good at the 26 mile point and the Original Buffalo, Abe Underwood turned a stellar 4:52 in his first marathon in several years. Abe and Jeremiah Russell (age 70 now !) ran the race together in their mutual return to this distance and to celebrate Jeremiah’s big 70 age group!

Chip Lee Rhodes was also a full-marathon finisher there in Phoenix, but his official time is not available at this point.

Saturday, January 21, 8:00 a.m. from University Park on University Ave. near the Howe Ave. overpass:
FREE Club Race/time trial: Using the University Park 5k/10k road course, club members will have the choice of either a personally timed 5k distance or 10k option. The actual time start will be at about 8:15 a.m. after a 1-2 mile warmup starting at 8 am. This format harkens back to the 1980’s when we had several Saturday low-key speed workout options around the area. Running 3-4 miles at a strong tempo effort is very good preparation for a long endurance run in the subsequent 24-30 hours, since the Saturday 3-4 miles at tempo promotes higher levels of red blood cell count and thus better oxygen carrying capacity—according to some research.

Sunday, January 22, 8:00 a.m. from Panera Bread Company at 901 Howe Ave, Sacramento.
Long run workout with 75 minutes out and faster back the scheduled format.

Chips Exchange Update

1/2/2006 - Parrott has their 2004 VW Passat GLX AWD station wagon for sale.
9/21/05 - RUNNING TRADING CARDS FREE to good home
8/23/05 - Treadmill for Sale

See the Exchange Page on the Chips site for details on these items.

Suggestions for Content

I've had only one suggestion sofar for additional content. In the past people didn't like the email to contain non-running / training specific articles. However, it has been suggested that I might add a Chips Exchange item that at least indicates when new items are posted since there is no other notification process for new exchange items.

I guess some people might have trouble viewing the Blog site from work due to office policies or security settings. I'm not sure how to address this other than to suggest using a home email address or home internet access as needed.

The site was very slow during the day today but I've only experienced poor performance from this service once in a great while. So, hopefully any problems viewing the site or registering for the email notices were transient.

Buffalo Chips Weekly News Update

Club Prediction 5k Turns into 4k!

Front runners in the ever challenging annual Chips Prediction Run 5k found a new way to make the event more demanding….at least in terms of “winning.” The front 4-6 runners in the field decided to make a right turn onto Moffet just after the mile mark rather than continue ONWARD to the turn marks just past the 1.25 mile point on the course. Thus the first finishers this year turned near national class times of low 15 minutes, but then…they ran about a full kilometer less than the measured course and less than they expected for their “predicted finish times.” Immediate past high dunger, Tony Lafferty, properly directed all the runners behind his position in the field, and thus the winning “prediction errors” were still very close to measured time with a best prediction only 8 seconds off, and most of the prediction winners finishing around 25-29 minutes.

Several of the junior runners in the field said they “knew” the turn was wrong, but followed their adult “role models.” This made for a great object lesson on making their own decisions and going with what they KNOW is right…rather than “following the crowd!”

Cal 10 Miler in Stockton, Sunday January 8, 2006

(From Linda Hall)

Cal 10 Report: We had a great day for the Cal10 10 miler in Stockton on Sunday. It was a beautiful, sunny day but cool with a pretty significant head wind going out. That wind did help out on the way back! Lots of Chips were there and were prominent among the age group winners. This year the race was not a part of the PAUSATF grand prix series so the field was smaller than previous years. However, the new Fleet Feet of Stockton sponsored some pretty nifty black jackets with the race name and logo on them and the age groups were 5 year divisions going three deep. Among those who placed in the age groups were:

Heather Bracken (She was our Chips Senior woman of the Year and lived up to this award by getting first place in her division and winning a jacket. nice black jacket. Great work Heather!!!!!!!)
Linda Frazier
Linda Hall
Jim Fischer
Joel Contreras
Ernie Takahashi
Gordon Hall

Other chips who ran included: Mario Sanchez, Susan Frazier, and Gary Lotspeich. Apologies to those I missed.

PAUSATF Grand Prix Series:

Several people mentioned to me that they were disappointed that this race was not included in the Grand Prix series this year. If you are unhappy about this, I suggest that you send a message to LDR committee chair Tyler Abbott (email tabbott@gguol.ggu.edu) and express your dissatisfaction about this change. Here is what happened. At the PAUSATF LDR committee meeting, the sentiment was expressed that Cal10 in January was too close to CIM and people needed some time off in January. Some people wanted the Cal10 race director to put the race later in the season and stated that a bid at the earlier date would not be accepted by USATF. The race director did not want to change the date, so no bid was submitted this year. However, now some folks are unhappy with the PAUSATF road race schedule because the grand prix races don't start until March and then tend to be bunched together. If you are unhappy with any aspect of this, let the LDR committee chair Tyler Abbott know about it. You should know that Chips are allowed to have 3 voting reps at each PAUSATF LDR committee meeting. They are usually held after some of the grand prix races. Recently, I have been the only Chips rep there. So if we want our voices heard, it would help to have more folks at the meetings. This is an issue that the new Chips Board may want to discuss and respond to.

Sunday, January 8, Cal 10 in Stockton

Though this is NOT part of the PA-USATF Grand Prix series for 2006, it is still a good race to get back into the swing of faster tempo efforts. Support our sister club in Stockton and participate in this year’s Cal 10 Miler there.

Target has Running Apparel on Sale this Week!

Skiing and Mountain Driving This Winter?

Parrott has their 2004 VW Passat GLX AWD station wagon for sale. With only about 5900 miles this vehicle is virtually new, and is for sale only because Parrott “has the bug” for more power and more gadgets” in his infrequent driving. This is the third vehicle from the VW-Audi platform that Parrott and Iwahashi have owned, and a 2006 Passat is being considered as the next vehicle. Hence it is fair to say that the VW marquis has been very satisfactory in our experience. Price? How about splitting the difference between KBB trade-in and private sale cost? This means about $22,500 as of this time? Talk to Parrott if interested…The wagon is a beautiful “candy apple red metallic” with grey leather interior.

Weekly Club E-mails

I'm thinking of changing the method I use to generate the weekly emails. The new method will allow you to decide if you want them or not by subscribing to email notices o f new messages from the blog I use to post the news and articles. http://buffalochipsnews.blogspot.com/

To subscribe to the weekly emails look for the Subscribe me! field and button down the left side of the page.

There are currently two other people who can add content to the site. Contributors are added by invite only so it is not a free for all. I plan on keeping it to the current board members and maybe one or two others. There is no advertising on this site and it is only club related news that you currently find in the weekly emails.

Any comments or suggestions let me know. I'd like to make this work well for all.
