Club Elections, Prediction Run and Annual Potluck Brunch

14 January, Sunday, University Park Clubhouse

Here's what it is:

This is a fun, free, club-only 5k race that anyone can win. When you register, you put down your predicted time and surrender your watch. Whoever finishes closest to their predicted time wins!

Here’s the schedule:

Registration and food drop-off: 7 am to 7:50 a.m.
5k Prediction Run: 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Potluck Brunch: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Club Elections: 10-10:15 a.m.
Cleanup of clubhouse: 11-11:30 a.m.

Here are the directions:

Off Howe at Swarthmore enter parking lot of office building, turn left/north to end of parking area…enter through gate to clubhouse for registration and food drop-off.

Board Election Details

Have you wanted to help keep the Buffalo Chips the best club in Northern California? Have you noticed my eyes glaze when you suggest the club could do something better? Here’s your chance to step up and make something happen. Be a part of the “sausage making” that is the management of the club. We’ll be holding elections for the Board of Directors after the Prediction Run this January 14th. You must be there to vote, but you needn’t be there to be elected. Send me a note if you want to put your name on the ballot!

John Blue, High Dunger

PS: I know it says January 6th in the Buffalo Bible but we couldn't use the clubhouse on that date!

Weekly News Update

Coming….Xmas Relays…The BEST way to get your workout in for this coming weekend is to join with a group of friends and run 4.4 miles around Lake Merced! This is one of THE oldest and most traditional events for runners in all of Northern California. It originally was sited along Hiway 1, but then was moved for safety concerns to the Lake Merced setting where it is on sidewalks and mostly free from cars.

Four person teams with various age and gender combinations are required for team competition scoring. It is great FUN !

Past Weekend…Honolulu Marathon

Men’s winner 2:13; women’s winner 2:27…new COURSE RECORD and a $67,000 total payday for that racer ! And she was not in the “invited runner” group, as she decided to do the event after all the funds for such athletes were distributed, so she paid her own way there and covered her own expenses…easily with those prize winnings !

Honolulu is about the most enjoyable that any 42km challenge can provide. It is almost always too warm for ideal racing, but …who cares….you ARE running “in paradise.”

Be sure and put the Honolulu Marathon on your “to do” list. 17,000 out of the field of 28,000 were visiting Japanese, so clearly they KNOW where the “fun” is.

NOTE: It was a small, but dedicated group that showed up this past Sunday at the Fish Hatchery ! What has happened to many of you? Rain “trauma?”

USATF Officiating is Fun!

by Ann Gerhardt

Anyone interested in becoming a USATF certified official has a chance to learn how on January 13 at American River College or January 20 at UCDavis Hickey Gym.

Go to www.pausatf.org and click on Officials, then calendar, to get more details.

You DON”T HAVE TO KNOW ANYTHING about officiating. They teach you all that. All you need is a desire to give back to sport and some time to donate.

I’ve been an official for almost 10 years. It’s fun to get to know the area T&F coaches and officials, who are uniformly great people, if sometimes quirky. One can specialize in a particular event (mine are racewalk judging and horizontal jumps), or do some of all of them. The coaches always need officials for local track meets and show their appreciation, at least with a sandwich and chips for meet-day lunch.

Athletes need competent officials in order to keep competition fair and results accurate. It’s impressive to see the growth of athletes as they learn the respect for rules and discipline to follow them, as they mature from rather unruly high schoolers to collegiate stars. We contribute to that growth. We level the playing field so that it is fair for all. You, too, could be a part of it.

Rumors circulated in 2000 that many Chips were going to become certified so they could officiate at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. Most didn’t follow-through and missed a great experience. Actually, becoming certified in January 2000 didn’t qualify anyone to officiate the Trials by summer. It might have qualified someone to be a marshall or to escort athletes to the pee station.

But by 2004, after 4 years of officiating, I was asked to be part of the field event set-up group: You know, the ones who laid the (perfect) white-tape arcs for the hammer, discus, shot put and javelin. Pretty cool being on the field and getting to hang out in the official’s tent, watching competition on closed-circuit TV when it was too hot to sit on the complementary athletes bleachers.

ASICS World Distance Summit

The ASICS World Distance Summit may be of interest to our Buffalo Chip members. It is scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2006, 6 to 8 pm at the Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf, 550 North Point St., San Francisco, CA 800/942-7348. Some of the top speakers on running are featured at this event: Steve Scott, US Mile record holder at 3:47, current coach at Cal State San Marcos; Dr. Armando Siquieros, past winner of Warf to Warf race, coach at Mission Prep HS in San Luis Obispo which Jordan Hasay, defending Footlocker Nation Champion runs; Jim Spivey, Former Women’s coach at Vanderbilt University and 3:50 miler; Dr. Joe Vigil, 1988 US Olympic Coach and 2004 Olympic coach for marathoner Deena Kastor; and Mike Fanelli, Moderator and commentator on the history of competitive distance running and physiology of training.

This event is absolutely free as a Christmas present from Asics to the coaches and fans of distance running in California. More details can be found at the California Track & Running News website.

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park will also host the Club Cross Country National Championship Meet on Saturday, December 9, 2006 just east of the polo field. The scheduled start times are: 10:30 am for the Masters Women, 11:30 for the Masters Men; 12:45 pm for the Open Women; and 1:30 for the Open Men. This is a great venue for cross country running. A lot of hard work goes into putting a meet like this together so we are fortunate to have a couple of top quality events for runners and fans in Northern California.

Buffalo Chips' Western States Entry

It's that time of year again! Because the Chips run an aid station at the Western States Endurance Run (Devil's Thumb), we have one entry to give to a club member. This year, the Buffalo Chips Board slightly re-jiggered the criteria the 2004 Board adopted and will be using these to select our lucky entrant.

If you are a current member of the Buffalo Chips and are interested in this Western States entry, please read the following carefully.

Buffalo Chips' Western States Endurance Run Entry Prerequisites

The Applicant Must:

1. Be a current member of the Buffalo Chips Running Club in good standing.

2. Be a current member of USATF and have #104 (Buffalo Chips) as their club.

3. Have represented the Buffalo Chips in a USATF race during the calendar year.

4. Have met all of the criteria for Western States Endurance Run (WSER) entry and have entered the regular WSER lottery, and not been selected during the regular drawing.

5. Have exhausted all other "special consideration" opportunities as prescribed by the WSER Board of Directors.

6. Notify the Buffalo Chips Board of Directors, either by email or phone, within three days of the WSER lottery to express their intent to request the Buffalo Chips’ entry.

7. Submit a résumé describing their contribution to the Buffalo Chips and their relevant racing history. (Keep it short. We're slow readers.)

Additional Selection Considerations:

When more than one qualified member requests the Buffalo Chips WSER entry the following guidelines should be employed:

1. First consideration should be given to club members who have contributed significant time to the club during the current or prior year as determined by the current board. Club members such as the Enquirer editor, club Race Directors, Board Members and others who volunteer significant amounts of time to the betterment of the club, and the running community, should be considered in this group.

2. Second consideration should be given to those who have requested Buffalo Chips entry in prior years and have been denied. Also, if all other aspects are deemed equal and one or more applicant has used the exemption in the past, then the member that hasn’t used the exemption previously would have priority.

3. Third consideration would be past WSER performances. The Buffalo Chips Board will consider the likelihood of the applicant finishing the race or scoring USATF points for the club. Also, if an applicant needs a WSER finish to achieve a major milestone, such as a tenth finish, they may not qualify for an automatic entry through the WSER Board of Directors but should be considered for the Buffalo Chips entry.

4. Fourth consideration would be "The good of the Sport." Would granting a certain applicant the exemption enhance the WSER event as well as promote the Buffalo Chips?

5. At its discretion, the Buffalo Chips Board of Directors may select multiple club members as being qualified (i.e., create a "short list") and draw the final name at random.

Good Luck!

Weekly News Update

Upcoming THIS WEEKEND !!

California International Marathon, Folsom to Sacramento, Sunday 3 December

Buffalo Bash, Club Party and Awards Banquet, 5-9 pm Sunday, 3 December

CIM EXPO, Friday PM and all day Saturday, Downtown Convention Center

Whew ! One gets tired just thinking about all this “action.”

Quad Dipsea, Saturday, 25 November

Doug Arnold, showing that turning 60 is not a real burden to the inspired, finished with distinction the QUAD DIPSEA this past weekend. Also in the finisher’s column was the ever young 73 year experienced Lee Rhodes. Congratulations to all finishers there and especially to our senior inspirations !

Run To Feed The Hungry, 20,000 and more each year !

The 2006 edition of this wonderful event was staged in perhaps an almost IDEAL Fall day. If you were one of the perhaps dozen or so Sacramento area runners NOT there you missed a most incredible morning group workout.

The men’s event was highly contested and the order of the final paychecks was only decided at the finish line by a 2 second margin between first and second for the men. It had been a solidly contested battle from the second mile onward in that front of the pack group in the 10k. For women, it appears that the general order of finishers was probably decided by the end of the first mile with out-of-towners Kristen Anderson (first) and Heather Gibson (second) taking solid claim to those pay totals, but local CHIP MARY COORDT put her claim in for 3rd quite early in the distance and turned a solid 37 minute effort into that payday for 3rd woman.

Master’s Chip female Jenny Hitchings broke 40 minutes for the VERY FIRST TIME to claim the 40-49 best effort with another impressive Chippee in Angela Tanghetti finishing at 6:53/mile in her first race in a couple of years ! Welcome back Ms. Tanghetti! Diane Kato and Linda Hall also placed well in their respective divisions.

On the men’s side, High Dunger John Blue WON the men’s 40-44 with the creative John Nichols close behind in 3rd for that division. Dennis Early took a 3rd in the 50-54 divison and the 55-59 age group was WON by Chris Enfante. Craig Newport was 3rd in the 60-64 age set with the legendary Gordon Hall claiming 3rd in the 70-74 group. Congratulations to all finishers, of course.

In the fast field 5k, Kirsten Schneider was 2nd in the 35-39 division; Florence Fong was 2nd in the 65-69 and Po Adams WON the over 80 age range. On the men’s side Roger Fong WON the men’s 70-74 and Tim Jordan and Don Spickelmier went 1-2 in the 65-69 set as they continue to duke it out with no clear pattern yet resolved as that battle goes back some 35 years !

Congratulations, of course to ALL FINISHERS!

Reportedly the BIG WINNER on Thanksgiving was the Sacramento Foodbank with around $500,000 generated from this wonderful event for their programs.

THANK YOU SACRAMENTO !

I was wondering if you could assist me by sending the attached pdf to the Buffalo Chips mailing list. I am the designer who created the Buffalo Chips Club logo. My good friend Sally Edwards (see below) suggested I contact you she is out of the country and is not able to facilitate her idea to send this invitation to the Club's mailing list. Have a look and let me know. The show is free, fun, and attended by fit folks at a fitness club! Refreshments. Thank you in advance for considering my request.

Clarksburg 30k and 5k and Half-Marathon and 20 Miler

Wow, what a set of alternatives! While I am the biggest “fan” of the 20 mile distance at Clarksburg, since it is the original “long road race” in all of Northern California, I would encourage Chips to run the 30k as it is the PA-USATF championship event. ONLY the 30K distance scores runners for team and individual awards in the Grand Prix series as Linda Hall also notes in her report….

The Clarksburg series of races had one of the largest turnouts that I remember probably because they offered so many options this year:

5k, half marathon, 30 k (the PAUSATF race), 30 k relay, and 20 miler. The day started sunny and cool and never really warmed up making it perfect long distance running weather. This year's shirt was a technical fabric T shirt and those who signed up in advance, were able to get their preferred sizes while the procrastinators were swimming in the larger sizes.....a real reason to register early.

Chips participated in most or all of the races. It’s just too bad that those who ran the 20 miler, didn't just run the 30 k and then add on 1.4 miles at the end so that we could count them for team scoring...Oh wel,l maybe next year.

While the race went very well for some of us, there was a group of us who turned the wrong way just after the 20k mark due to a negligent course monitor. We went 1 mile or more in the wrong direction before a firetruck came by to tell us we were going the wrong way and to offer us a ride. Guessing that taking a ride would be against USATF rules, we all turned around and went back past the monitor who allowed us to go the wrong way. We had some choice words on the way back for the monitor who claimed he "did not see" us.....

When we complained to the race director at the end, he said: "How could you go wrong, it is an out and back course!" I don't know about the others, but I was just keeping my eyes on the folks ahead of me, trying to stay with them or catch up. Besides, I remember running by open fields and ditches filled with green water and those were also found on the "wrong way" course. Anyway, the good news is that we all still finished and were able to add 2 unexpected miles to our log books at the end of the day!

The Chips I saw were:

30 k Women
Jenny Hitchings (1) 2:05:28
Liz Ware (13) 2:39
June Montuori (2) 2:46:17
Chris Wellins (ageless.....come on Chris, you have to tell them your age so we can score you!)

And a super senior women's team of
Barbara Elia (1) 2:49:17
Cynci Calvin (2) 2:58:24
Linda (wrong way) Hall (5) 4:00:26

30 k Men:
Mark Murray (11) 2:03:00
Dennis Early (9) 2:12:16
John Nichols (16) 2:09:22
Ernie Takahashi (5) 2:19:04
Tony Alvarez 3:07:59

5k
Nova Poff (age group 1st) 26:29
George Billingsley (age group 1st)
Half marathon
Lindsay Pears Dickson (8) 2:07:39 (a significant PR for her!)
Mike Schwartz (14) 2:07:40 (looks like Lindsay out-sprinted him at the end!)

20 miler:
Sharon Lindeque 3:04:24
Frank Slachman 3:22:20
Mike Villierme 3:52:02
Art (wrong way) Smith 4:25:31
Ron Adams also ran, but I don't know which race. I know there were others that I missed. Sorry.

VOTE-VOTE-VOTE-VOTE-VOTE-VOTE-VOTE !!!!!!!

Make our system work by making YOUR interests known !

Helen Klein 50k Almost a “Chip Sweep”

Taking 2nd (Erik Skaden), 3rd,John Blue, and 4th (Mark Murray), the Bison completely dominated the top of the finisher order in the 50k event. FIRST WOMAN was Kirsten Schneider in 4:19 (8th overall) and Dennis Early rounded out the top 10 overall in that 50k distance. Also on the finisher list: Dan Cox, Ron Peck and Becky Johnson to note just some of the other buffalo running 31 miles.

Mark Lantz was 5th in a solid 6:57 in the 50 mile division, and Ron Tabler, Cynci Calvin and Linda McFadden were easy to find on the 30k finisher record.

The really unfortunate element of the 30k at Saturday’s Helen Klein races is that it was started….EARLY. Yikes ! It is one thing to start a race a few minutes late, but another entirely to send off the main field while some are still checking sweats, finishing their last porta-potty time, etc.

Dean Karnazes Finishes 50-50-50 with a FLOURISH!

Running the NYC Marathon as the last element in his 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, highly promoted Dean Karnazes showed his critics that he IS one pretty tough animal. Running 1:30:31 for the crowded first 13.1, dramatic Dean closed his last 13.1 in a slightly negative 1:29:59 to finish at 3:00:30, which was by far his fastest 42km in any of his 50 finishes and he ALMOST caught the highly touted Lance Armstrong (2:59:36). Lance was about TWO MINUTES ahead of Dean at around the 30km point, but Dean was simply MUCH STRONGER than Lance and finished much better over the last 8 miles.

Congratulations to ALL NYC MARATHON FINISHERS including our own Sara Heintz and at least a couple of other Sacramento based Big Apple Masters.

Helen Klein Reimbursement

Great job, Chips, at the Helen Klein Ultras! I think we made our point with the solid showing, in numbers and placement, in all the races.

To receive up to $50 in reimbursement for your Helen Klein entry, you must follow The Rules.

The Rules:

* You must be a Buffalo Chips member in good standing on race day;
* You must be a USATF member with the Buffalo Chips (club 104) as your club affiliation on race day;
* During the race, you have to be identifiable as a Chip (i.e., run in a Chips jersey); and
* You have to actually start the race (We understand that ultras have a significant DNF risk.).

To request reimbursement, send a note and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) to:

Weekly News Update

Four Bridges hosts about 1300 finishers…

The annual trek around Lake Natomas found about equal numbers of men and women making the 13.1 mile journey around the Lake and back to Folsom for the post-race celebration. Carolyn McCarter was first in the womens’ 45-49 division and Diane Kato took home a 3rd in the women’s 50-54 age group.Dennis Early and Chris Enfante were 2nd and 3rd in the men’s 50-54 group. Craig Newport was 3rd in the men’s 60-64 group. The ever young Tony Alvarez took first in the mens’ 70+ age section. In the women’s 55-59, Maggie Ward claimed a 3rd, and in the next group Cynci Calvin took home a 2nd.

Congrats to ALL finishers !

Marine Corp. Marathon, Washington, D.C.

Ernie Takahashi showed his solid marathon credentials with a 3:39 finish as sponsored in his participation there by VSP, one of the race supporting commercial foundations.

The women’s field at Marine Corps this year was a bit slow with an overall winning time of only 3:00:22, while the men’s was a bit better at just over 2:21.

Big Sur Half Marathon

Katie O’Sullivan notched a new 13.1 mile PR with a 1:55 finish at this beautiful event..

Coming Locally this NEXT WEEKEND: Helen Klein 50k, 50 miles …

Chips CLUB SUPPORT for entries up to $50/person available to help cover entry expenses to this event. See John Blue or other club board members ASAP !

Coming Sunday, Nov. 5: NYC Marathon—What WILL Lance Run? Will Meb break 2:09? Will Deena break 2:20 ??? Check TV and internet coverage for the excitement.

On the World Scene: Nairobi Marathon

Want to run a marathon in one of the worst air quality cities in the world? Want to also finish that 42km with the whole course sited at 6000’ and higher. Try the Nairobi Marathon for your next challenge !

However, don’t go thinking it will be a “cherry pick,” as this is where the unsponsored Kenyans RACE to try to get attention and support for outside travel to real money races and the glory of international competition.

At the Races

This is not a comprehensive list, but there have been several races the past couple of weekends and a few notable results.

Chicago Marathon
The weekend before last saw at least two Chips take on the Chicago Marathon. First Chip (and first Sacramento area runner) in was Board Member Jenny Hitchings, who ran a speedy 3:03. Next in was Bruce Yonehiro who ran 3:23.

This weekend saw Chips running races from Sea to Shining Sea.

Marine Corps Marathon (Washington, D.C.):
Ernest Takahashi ducked under the four-hour mark with a 3:59:58 finish, fast enough for a ninth place Super Senior finish.

Four Bridges Half Marathon
For the Men, the first Chip, and 2nd place senior, was Dennis Early with a brisk 1:27. He was chased in, 30-seconds later, by John Nichols, also at 1:27. Bob Fredenburg followed in 1:34, Shane Curren in 1:37, and Dennis Zilaff (I'll give you the chip time.) in 1:48.

For the women, the first Chip and 1st place age group finish goes to the tireless Carolyn McCarter, coming in at 1:37. Cynci Calvin finished a Super Senior 2nd in 2:05.

Grape Stomp Half Marathon (Livermore)
It would appear a few Chips snuck off for a run in scenic Livermore. First female, and 4th overall, was Mary Coordt who ran 1:22. Husband Dave Michel came in a bit later in 1:38. Chris Iwahashi finished a Senior 2nd in 1:44.

Great job, Chips! My sincere apologies to any I may have missed.

Parkway Hero Fund Update

I continue to be proud of this club for our speedy runners and commitment to our community. Through donations collected at Tuesday night workouts and the Buffalo Stampede, we were able to raise several hundred dollars for this family. It was reported that more than one cash prize winner at the Buffalo Stampede walked right over to the "donation can" and dropped in their winnings. What great people! Thanks to all of you for your generosity.

This letter went out with our contribution:

Re: Rickey Dickerson Trust fund

October 22, 2006

Please accept this check for $1,000 from the Buffalo Chips Running Club for deposit in the Rickey Dickerson trust fund at the American River Bank. The check is a small token of the club’s appreciation of the sacrifice that Rickey Dickerson and his family have made in defense of peaceful and safe use of the American River Parkway. It represents general club funds as well as individual member contributions to our “Parkway Hero Fund”.

Virtually every member of our running club uses the parkway for running, and most members use it for other activities such as biking and hiking. Security has always been an issue for all members but especially for women. We are therefore very grateful to anyone who acts to protect and defend the peaceful users of the parkway. This is particularly the case if protection of the innocent results in harm to the rescuer.

Please extend our sympathies to Rickey Dickerson’s family and let them know how much we appreciate his sacrifice and theirs, and wish them all the best of luck in an unfortunate situation.

Sincerely,

The Board and the Members

Chips race alert: Helen Klein 50/50

The upcoming Helen Klein Ultra Classic is a key race and if we can score teams we may be able to win the PAUSTFA ultra championships for Men, Women AND Mixed teams. (Look here for details: http://www.pausatf.org/data/2006/umstandt2006.html )

To this end, we want the Chips to field as large a team as possible and we're offering to reimburse you for up to $50 of your entry fee for the Helen Klein 50K or 50 Mile race (not the 30k). (If I had done my homework, I'm sure we could have gone for $60--the price until 11/3.) The race is November 4th. But enter ASAP before the prices go up! See http://www.ultrarunner.net/hkmain.html for details.

The rules:

* You must be a Buffalo Chips member in good standing on race day;
* You must be a USATF member with the Buffalo Chips (club 104) as your club affiliation on race day ( http://www.pausatf.org/data/membership.html );
* During the race, you have to be identifiable as a Chip (i.e., run in a Chips jersey);
* You have to actually start the race (We understand that ultras have a significant DNF risk.).
* You pay and request reimbursement.
* We've set aside a limited (but substantial) amount of money for this, so it's first come, first served.

We're also doing this for the Christmas Relays so start putting your teams together! Details will follow, but basically we'll pay for any Chips teams (four runners each) that participate in the relay.

See you on race day!
John

Weekly News Update

Heritage Oaks, PA-USATF Championship 10K (From Linda Hall)

Want to be a “professional runner” no matter your actual speed? Heritage Oaks Open 10k

It was a great day for this race in Paso Robles. Cool and sunny. In the National Masters Championship 10k, Chips Super senior women had a team of

Barbara Miller

Nova Poff

Linda Hall

There were fast folks from all over (Utah, Texas, Indiana, etc.) in this race. Barbara was second in her age group and Nova was third. In addition, in the age graded results, Barbara took home $1000 prize money. Great work Barbara!!!

Some younger Chips there in the open division, but I did not get their results.

It was really true: everyone who ran the open 10k got $50 as they crossed the finish line. There were also a lot of fun runs including some really fast kids in the half and full mile runs, great costumes in the Mascot race (all entrants eligible for a $500 draw prize...we really need to get a chip in a Buffalo costume next year), and a funny diaper dash where all entrants were eligible for a $250 draw prize. Four round trips for two to Hawaii were also given away as draw prizes. It was a fun family championship event.

Rio Del Lago 50 Miles

Our own Mark Lantz, already leading in the 40-49 men’s ultra Grand Prix series added to this with THE OVERALL WIN at the Rio Del Lago 50 miles beating even all the team groups in that distance this past weekend. Whew ! Second, some 30 minutes back was former Chip Jim Howard (age 52) making an impressive return to solid form after an almost life-threatening fall from his home roof last year.

Ultra Grand Prix Current Standings….Chips in Control !

The PA-USATF Ultra Grand Prix series is being totally dominated by the bison and bisonette this year. Leading the women’s under 29 division is Chip Molly Pelton; leading the women’s 40-49 group is Chip Rena Schumann followed in second by Chip Karyn Hoffman. In the women’s 50-59 group, Chris Flaherty is #3 and Barbara Ashe holds #5 overall. Leading in the women’s 60-69 division is Barbara Elia.

In the men’s 30-39 group, Erik Skaden is numero uno, and Mark Lantz is tops in the men’s 40-49 segment followed in 3rd there by John Nichols. In the men’s 50-59 division James Yee comes across in the 5th position and in the 60-69 group, Ernie Takahashi is #3 followed in 5th by Ron Peck.

In TEAM SCORING, the Buffalo Chips are #2 in men’s and #1 in both mixed and women’s groups. The club’s overall standing is….NUMBER ONE in the PA-USATF 2006 Ultra Grand Prix at this time !

Congratulations to all bison and bisonettes who have taken this extended series of challenges this year.

World News……

Berlin Marathon Produces Year’s Fastest !

Following his 58:55 road half marathon world best time this past January at the Phoenix Rock and Roll venue, Haile Gebrselassie (ETH ) continued his road dominance with a sparkling solo 2:05:56 NR for a $50,000 + $30,000 bonus in time incentives payday. His closest pursuer was almost 5 minutes behind at the finish line. Gete Wami, also of Ethiopia, ran 2:21 for the women’s win and a $65,000 total payday.

Gebrselassie was on WORLD RECORD pace up to 35 km, from that point he slowed just enough to miss the CR and WR set by Paul Tergat on this course at 2:04:55. (Tergat had the advantage of a training partner who was able to push him right up to the finish line where his buddy was outkicked but still finished at 2:04:58 for second place that day and the fastest “loser” in history!)

T-Marathons Equal

This past weekend, both the Toronto and Turin Marathons were hosted and both settings saw men’s overall winning times of 2:10. Coincidence, but at least somewhat interesting.

Boulder Backroads Marathon and Half-Marathon (Colorado)

The full marathon on a rolling course under perfect weather conditions was won in a somewhat slowish 2:43:10 with the second place finisher almost a full six minutes back. The big news here, however, is that the FIRST PLACE OVERALL was a FEMALE, Nuta Olaru, one of the elite women training in the altitude there. Of course that 6000’ elevation had something to do with the “somewhat slowish” times.

In the half-marathon, Chips Lee Rhodes (70-75 age division) was second and Ginger Bryan (65-69 group) dominated her division. Chris Iwahashi took a 3rd place in her 50-54 age group.

This was a totally spectacular event staged in a beautiful setting with great overall entrant services and support.

Report on Jamba Juice 5k, PA-USATF Grand Prix …(From Linda Hall)

The first chip finisher was Joel Contreras at 22:35 (Age group place=7) with Barbara Miller close behind at 22:37 (2).

Next came Monty Schacht at 24:01 (17th) with Doug Braasch at 24:43 (6th) which was a valiant effort since Doug has been suffering with plantar....

Lindsay Pears-Dickson had a PR for the 5k distance with a 26:08 (20) which was about 1.5 minutes faster than last year (a tribute to her dedication and hard work at the Tuesday night workouts!

Linda Hall finished in 28:25 (4). Apologies to anyone missed.

The next USATF race will be next Sunday. The Heritage Oaks 10 in Paso Robles. Linda Hall still has a room available for that if you want to drive or carpool to PR on Sat. She also clarified the situation with USATF about >40 year olds running in the open race (where one might get $50 random prize). If you are 40 or older you must run in the later masters Championship 10 (no $50) in order to qualify for individual and team points. (Of course, you must also be a USATF member with Buffalo Chips club 104 as your affiliation).

Also, Linda still has rooms available for the Humboldt half marathon on Oct 15th. (the rooms are for the night of Sat Oct 14th). Please let her know ASAP if you would like to reserve a room.

Other PA/USATF news for older chips:

Starting next year 2007 the PAUSATF association is leading the way by creating a new category "Super Veterans" for folks older than 80. Although at this time, there will not be monetary awards in this category, the male and female individual point leaders at the end of the year, will receive complementary entries into all of the PAUSATF grand prix series the following year. So there is a value to growing old.

And it gets even better. Beginning in 2008, for each grand prix road race will offer $25 prize money to the first male and female finisher in the Veterans division (>70). At this time, these folks get recognition, but no prize money. So folks it pays to get old!

Finally, for the Christmas Relays, teams that won first place in 2005 will get a complementary entry for 2006. This means that for 2006 the Chips Super Senior women (>60) will get a free entry. Hurrah.

Training Tip…Want to improve your running speed? One of the best workouts is the LONGER tempo run.

Try starting with about a 3 mile effort run at the pace you would or could do for a 10k race. As you become somewhat comfortable doing this workout twice a week, then graduate to a 5 mile tempo effort done at the pace of a half-marathon race. Do about 2 weeks of this challenge, twice a week, then graduate to a 8 mile tempo run paced at about 30 seconds FASTER than goal marathon speed. Do about 2 weeks of these efforts and then graduate to 10 miles done at about 20 seconds faster than goal marathon pace.

NOTE: Runners who are simply “larger framed” individuals must do longer endurance workouts than smaller framed athletes. There is a reason that Kenyans and other East Africans are such efficient runners and it does NOT come from “training at altitude,” but rather because they tend to have the somatotype ideal for longer running efficiency. Running longer distances is all about having enough FUEL in your tank to energize your metabolism for that demanded distance. It is simply physics, it takes MORE FUEL to move more “mass.” A larger athlete must move more mass, and hence demands more internal fuel. You must simulate your metabolic demands in your workouts and learn how to respond accordingly.

The larger athlete should generally extend their long runs and tempo runs about 20% to 25% longer than that which would be required by the lighter bodied athlete….or suffer ….running out of fuel in those last 3-5 miles on “race day.”

Buffalo Stampede a BIG Success!

This year’s Buffalo Stampede was the absolutely BEST in anyone’s personal memory and most of us think it was the absolutely best in the event’s history.

From the entrant’s perspective, there were great goodies and wonderful post-run ambience and support. The course was perfectly marked and measured, and the monitors, aid stations and police support was without fault.

The weather, usually decent to good, was outstanding with an almost ideal morning temperature, only the slightest of breezes for optimal cooling, and later day temperatures still in the comfortable range for relaxing after the run.

Wow!

And the club’s perspective on the event, notes virtually no complaints or negative comments from the entrants, and the numbers were UP, UP, UP from any previous year:

From Pete Zinsli’s Database:

1998-444
1999-520
2000-584
2001-535
2002-406
2003-432
2004-378
2005-542
2006-839

The numbers recorded are the total number of finishers officially recorded through the available years of Pete’s record keeping. Some of the earlier years saw both a 5k and the 10 mile distance noted, and recent years total the Migration plus the Stampede to produce that total. By any counting metric, this was a wonderful outcome for the club and for the community in terms of participation!

To Shanna, Jennifer, and their cadre of dedicated volunteers and to all the club members who gave of their time and energy to support the event with their work…a BIG THANK YOU.

FIRST CHIP appears to be Ed Randolph with a 3rd in the 30-34 division and a time of 60:57 with first FEMALE CHIP for Mary Coordt winning the 35-39 age division with her 63:20.

Further distinguished female Chip performances included Susan Frazier 2nd in the under 14 division, Lauren Eisenbud with a 2nd in the 20-24 division. We “adopt” Lauren as she is the youngest daughter of legendary Chip, Elliot Eisenbud, who as Race Director of this event some 24 years ago sited it at Rio Americano High School and set the first version of the course from that venue. Elliot also finished the migration division of the event this year!

Jenny Hitchings was 2nd in the 40-44 division with a solid 65:57 and Chris Iwahashi was 3rd in the women's’ 50-54 group. WINNING the 60-64 division was super steady Chippette Barbara Elia with Cynci Calvin 3rd in that group.

On the age division male side, Nathan Paddeck and Jerune Keukenkamp duked it out in the under 14 age group with Nathan taking the first in 62:30 to Jerune’s 65:31. Kal Lowden was 2nd in the 30-34 group, and High Dunger, John Blue, pulled out a 3rd in the highly competitive men’s 40-44 division with a 61:17 over fast starting John Nichols who arrived marginally later in 62:12.

Chris Enfante produced a solid 3rd in the men’s 50-54 category with a wonderful 67:47 while Ernie Takahashi barely missed breaking 70 minutes at 70:11 for 2nd in the 60-64 group and Gordon Hall took home a 3rd place award for the over 70 age division.

Congratulations to ALL participants and ALL VOLUNTEERS; it was a wonderful morning in Sacramento fitness!

Coming Paso Robles 10k and in October….Humboldt Half-Marathon!

Are YOU planning on a “marathon” in the Fall?

IF you are among the many Bison planning on a Fall marathon (Chicago, NYC, CIM, etc.), then your training should now be in a highly programmatic state. You MUST have two elements in your training NOW to make that marathon less traumatic on “race” day:

1. Long runs….You should have AT LEAST 6 long runs of 18 miles to….30 miles in the 16 weeks of buildup to your goal marathon. IF you are a male runner who weighs 170 pounds or more…then you really MUST be doing at least two (2) of those long runs of 26-30 miles.

2. Tempo runs…IF you are “time hopeful,” then you must also be increasing your running efficiency, and tempo runs are THE BEST venue for that improvement. The tempo runs done at least once and perhaps even TWICE a week should work up to 10 to even 12 miles of distance done at a pace just a bit FASTER than goal marathon pace. For example, if you are hoping to run a 3:30 marathon on race day, your tempo runs should be done at or just under 7:30/mile pace, and if your goal for the marathon is a “sub 3 hour” marathon then your tempo runs need to be at about 6:30/mile pace.

The metaphor of marathon preparation being like constructing a building works here so that without the core building elements….the building will simply collapse, and with strong building elements, then your construction will stand the “challenge of the elements.”

YOU CHOOSE.

Achilles Tendon Study

My name is Katie Antle and I am a graduate student at the University of California, Davis in the Biomedical Engineering Department currently conducting research in the Human Performance Laboratory. I am interested in the incidence of Achilles tendon injury in the 35-50 year old population, as this is the age range in which the majority of these injuries occur. I am hoping that you will answer a few short questions so that I can gage the prevalence of these injuries in the local population and decide if research in this area is warranted. The more information we have regarding Achilles tendon injuries, the better prepared we will be to prevent and treat such injuries. Simply 'reply' to this message and answer the following questions as accurately as possible. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. Thank you for your help.

Achilles Tendon Injury Questionnaire

1. Gender: Male or Female

2. Age:

3. Briefly describe the types of exercise/physical activity you participate in on a weekly basis ( e.g. play tennis twice per week, run 2-5 miles per week, play soccer 2 nights per week, etc.)?

4. On average, how many hours per week do you participate in exercise/physical activity (activities that you feel gets your heart beating fairly fast)?

5. Have you ever experienced any pain in the Achilles tendon region (the Achilles tendon is the large tendon that connects the muscles on the back of your lower leg to your heel bone)?
If yes, please answer the following questions:

a. Where was the pain located along the tendon (e.g. closer to the heel bone, to the calf muscle, or in between)?
b. What physical activities were you participating in days/weeks/months prior to the injury?
c. What were you doing at the time of injury (e.g. stepped off the curb and felt a pain in the back of my leg; pain came on gradually over time being more severe after resting)?
d. How long ago did the injury occur?
e. How long did the injury last?
f. What did you do to treat the injury?

6. If I decide to pursue research in this area, then would you be interested in participating in a research study that would involve simple ankle strength measurements and ultrasound imaging of your Achilles tendon on 2-3 separate occasions? Each testing session would be conducted at the UC Davis Human Performance Laboratory and would take approximately 1 hour.
If yes, then please provide let me know how you would prefer to be contacted (e.g. email, phone, etc.).

Thanks for taking the time to help me with this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email or phone.

Weekly News Update

One of the oldest and most respected regional runs in Northern California will be hosted at Rio Americano High School this coming Sunday (Sept. 10). The Buffalo Stampede has been a keystone in our valley racing scene for over 30 years and course records of 47 and change for men and in the 54 minute territory for women clearly attest to the potential for new personal records on this flat and fast course mostly along American River Drive.

With more than 600 already registered this year’s edition will be one of the largest fields in many years, and the event has become a first stage in the later Fall buildup for the California International Marathon in December.

If you are not going to run the race, then VOLUNTEER (contact Shanna Fanning).

See ALL of you on Sunday morning!

A Share of a $1,000,000 in Gold….(From David Monti, RRW)

This reports the final race of the European “Golden Series” in track…

Already on his own when he reached the 2000 meter mark in 5:07.50, Bekele churned out consistent sub-63 second laps, steadily increasing his lead over the chase pack by a second per lap. When he reached the bell in 11:58, the Ethiopian was nearly 11 seconds clear of the field. With a sub-60 second closing lap, he crossed the line in 12:57.74 to earn a US$ 83,333 share of the prize pie. With a furious closing charge over the final 150 meters, his younger brother Tariku Bekele finished second (13:04.83), with Abreham Cherkos Feleke, still only 16, third (13:05.40) to complete an Ethiopian sweep.

Wouldn’t it be nice if ANY American “teenager” could run a 13:05 5k?

Mather Mud Run…

WHY anyone would want willingly to slop through the mud is beyond moi, but our own Dennis Scott was SECOND in the 50-59 division and the ageless (81) Vic Lyons also completed this grueling event.

Congratulations and a big “Soap Up” to all finishers.

Silver State Marathon, Reno

Our own Mark Lantz turned a MOST IMPRESSIVE 2:58 on this high altitude road course to be third overall and the last person to actually break 3 hours this year. Soul-mate Rena Schumann won the women’s 40-49 age group in the full marathon distance.

NEWS….NEWS…..NEWS…..NEWS…

After only about 20 years of using the “traditional” version of the “Rescue” course, which for the history minded is actually the 3rd variation we have run out there, we now will mark and measure a NEW RESCUE COURSE VERSION….

Starting at the current starting point, the NEW COURSE will run on Green Valley Road to the West to Deer Valley Road and then along Deer Valley Road to the Fire Station with a 180 degree turn there after water to return to Starbuck Road for the transect back to the start. Mile markers in ORANGE will be provided for this new course in the next 3 weeks. There will always be the short transect course directly across Starbuck and the short loop option of going down to the West to Deer Valley and then Up Deer Valley back to Starbuck and then directly back to the finish (about 8 miles for that variation).

This new variation is MUCH SAFER with a wide shoulder along Green Valley Road and avoids the narrow shoulder and high traffic section of Green Valley Road to the East in the first 2.5 miles of the “old” version course.

Thanks to Mary Coordt and Dave Michael for suggesting this modification!

Also there WILL be another weekend training option outlined SOON in the El Dorado Hills immediate area. Apparently there is a most promising “hill workout” section there which is free from traffic. More details to follow in the next week or so, but this will be a workout venue for hopefully the Sunday after the Stampede. This is another of the training enrichments brought to us by Mary and Dave….

Buffalo Stampede Getting Closer…10 September

The area’s best, fastest, and most respected middle distance race is quickly approaching, so get your racing singlet and fast shoes out and be sure and do that last sharpening workout.

Of course the STAMPEDE is also a super good tune-up as part of the overall preparation for the December CIM. About the best overall workout for marathon improvement is a strong solid series of “tempo runs,” and the STAMPEDE can be a core of that element, along with Four Bridges and Clarksburg.

See you at the STAMPEDE.

From Bob Vendetti Relative to XC….

All those PA XC races are on the "2006 Cross Country Schedule" at

http://www.pausatf.org/data/2006/xcschedule2006.html

and there's a nifty "Abbreviated Schedule for printing," too, at

http://www.pausatf.org/data/2006/xcsched2006abbr.html

Last Saturday was the first race of the season, by the way, on a new course in Santa Rosa; and the next race is this coming Saturday, 9/2/06, at UC Santa Cruz. And we did score a Men's Seniors team at Santa Cruz, just barely. ["...For Men's Seniors 3 runner teams (with 2 displacers) will be scored after all 4-runner teams have been scored...)" Rule 5.D.]

Are YOU Marathon Training Yet?

The Stampede is coming soon, and this should be the first core element in your buildup to the December CIM, but your overall training should NOW include solid LONGER runs of 18-24 miles on at least two weekends a month. IF you are looking for a new PR this CIM, then you should also be working up your Saturday TEMPO RUN from the 3-4 miles we do in the early and middle summer cycle to 6 miles and then 10 miles by the end of October. Getting at least 4 weeks of 10 mile tempo runs in your resume before CIM is a core component to finding a new PR on your vita after CIM.

The beauty of the marathon is not it’s simple challenge, but that the challenge and the outcome is so totally a function of whether and how hard you have prepared. The outcome of the marathon should NEVER be a “mystery,” but rather the rewarding conclusion of your intelligent preparation.

Sam Thompson, who posts daily summaries on his blog, ran 26.2 miles in Bay St. Louis on Saturday, which followed a 26.2-mile run Friday in New Orleans, which followed a 26.2-mile run Thursday in Dallas and so on.

Between July 1 and Saturday, Thompson ran a marathon in every state, and added one a couple weeks ago in Washington, D.C., just for fun. He ran two marathons that day.

"He's a totally normal guy," said Kirsten Sellereit, Thompson's girlfriend and a registered dietitian who has been with him during his trip.

(From their press release of this day)

"An earlier starting time will benefit the 22,500 runners who compete in the marathon due to the cooler temperatures, while allowing all of the communities, and the City of Boston in particular, to re-open roads to traffic earlier in the day," said Guy Morse, Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association in a press release. "Also, due to the efficiency of the wave start program which we implemented for the first time in 2006, the majority of runners will not be transported from Boston to Hopkinton much earlier than in past years."

Race For the Arts, Friday, August 18

Almost 600 culturally sophisticated individuals turned out this past Friday to add their bodies and their $$ to a support 5k for Crocker Art Gallery. Top Chip age group notices got attention for Linda Hall, Ernie Takahashi, and even the ancient bison himself, Abe Underwood.

The MOST COMPETITIVE age group for both men and women was the 40-44 subset where for men, only 49 seconds covered first to 5th with John Blue (2nd), John Nichols (3rd) and Mark Murray (5th) duking it out for top honors.

For women, the spread from first to 5th was 1:17 with our Carol Parise turning a solid 20:xx and coming in 5th there.

In the men's 50-59, Dennis Scott and Gary Lotspeich scored in the top 5 and for the 70-79, Gordon Hall and Mike Meyer made the top finishers list. Congratulations to all finishers and thanks for supporting the "arts."
